When my grandmother was 29…

…I was born.

I can’t remember exactly where I got the link of the story at hand but I must say I couldn’t even read the entire article before I had turned my eyes up in shame. Besides the article there are actually photos and a video to accompany the already tasteless “news”.

Though teen pregnancies aren’t new in modern society they still seem perplexed even the most liberal of minds when one comes across stories such as these.

My one question would be who thought this would be a great idea as a feature story?  As someone who has studied journalism and once held the position of news editor of my college newspaper I have to say this story really saddens me. For more than the one obvious reason.

It disturbs me when news media exploits the simplicity of everyday people. Clearly Celia and her mother have been bamboozled by the “Quad-City Times” in a lackadaisical effort of presenting the public with real informative news.

What has this done for the community?  By shedding light on a 29 year old grandmother what contribution has the “Quad-City Times” done for its readers?  Better yet how has this effected Celia and her mother? Are 29 year old grandmothers the new fad? History has shown that fads die quickly so I’m not sure why we get all worked up over them in the first place.

The so called journalist who covered this story, I truly have to question her true intentions. It’s like subtle condescension. It bothers me that even in the video clip it pokes light of the fact of a true disservice to the child children at hand, the mother and the son.

But maybe I should stop short of saying how stupid this seems to me to be featured in a respected newspaper, lest I be considered judging others.

Your thoughts?

One Response to “When my grandmother was 29…”

  1. People like to see “others” who live on the outside of what “Standard Good Ol American Living” should (so they say) be. This is like a peep show at those who didn’t get it right.
Yeah, why is it newsworthy? Cause it’s entertaining to some, and allows others to shake their head and say, “those pathetic people”. BUT, there’s hope, we can always flip the channel and watch the news about students who get scholarships and remain unpregnant, graduate with high honors and remain unpregnant, and work as interns at the newspapers & hospitals while living a quiet unremarkable life in a small town. Yeah, just flip the channel. I’m sure it’s there somewhere.
